It is bordered on the north by the Ohio River and on the west by the Mississippi River. The county population is 9,000 and is 254 square miles in size.


What's in a name? Ballard County was established in 1842 from Hickman and McCracken Counties and named for Bland W. Ballard (1761-1853), Indian fighter and scout for George Rogers Clark's Ohio and Wabash campaigns. Captain Ballard later fought in the War of 1812 and served in the Kentucky Legislature.
