Ballard County is located in the far western part of Kentucky. It is
bordered on the north by the Ohio River and on the west by the
Mississippi River. The county population is 9,000 and is 254 square
miles in size.

What's in a name? Ballard County was
established in 1842 from Hickman and McCracken Counties and named
for Bland W. Ballard (1761-1853), Indian fighter and scout for George
Rogers Clark's Ohio and Wabash campaigns. Captain Ballard later fought
in the War of 1812 and served in the Kentucky Legislature.
